The Greatest Experiment Ever Performed on Women: Exploding the Estrogen Myth
by Barbara Seaman

The widespread prescribing of hormone therapy for the prevention of postmenopausal diseases is effectively over, but assessment of the real toll it has wrought on women is just beginning. Journalist Barbara Seaman was cofounder of the National Women’s Health Network in Washington D.C. and is heralded as a relentless fighter for the health of women. Her compelling book.

The Greatest Experiment Ever Performed on Women: Exploding the Estrogen Myth, traces the history of oestrogen use from the Nazi experimentation on women in concentration camps and the massive baby disaster following the ill-considered release of the DES formula in 1938,through to 2002 when female hormones had become the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world without any real knowledge as to their safety and long term effects. Seaman reveals how advertising pressures distorted crucial health reporting on menopause and hormones and writes that “hundreds of millions, possibly billions of women have been lab animals in this unofficial trial…[and] put at serious, often devastating risk.” While the book offers a personal account of forty years of persistently challenging the pharmaceutical industry and the medical establishment over the safety of HRT and the pill, it also covers the unchecked marketing of osteoporosis as a killer disease, concerns over environmental hormones, and useful information on current menopausal treatments. This is a very timely book for all the women left confused and questioning following the demise of HRT, and a fascinating account of the personalities and events behind the proliferation of prescription hormones.

Better Bones, Better Body: Beyond Estrogen and Calcium

By Dr. Susan Brown

This is an excellent book for any lay person who wants to better understand bone health and how to take a 'whole body' approach to maintaining it. Years of experience as a researcher and practitioner have given Dr. Susan Brown a wealth of knowledge about every aspect of osteoporosis and how to prevent and treat it. She does not subscribe to the mainstream acceptance that osteoporosis is a normal part of the aging process or that a diagnosis of low bone density is necessarily a cause for concern. Neither does she advocate long term drug use. Her approach involves nutrition, digestive system strengthening and exercise. Her research has led to her to believe that much of the basis for abnormalities in bone is due to a combination of bone depleting factors inlcuding a diet that is too acidic (the standard American diet) , nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and a lifestyle that is too sedentary and lacking in skeleton-strengthening exercise. Better Bones, Better Body complements The Myth of Osteoporosis well - I thoroughly recommend it.

BONE HEALTH

Women are constantly asking where they can go to get advice for non-medical approaches to bone health. Dr Susan Brown author of Better Bones, Better Body: Beyond Estrogen and Calcium directs the Osteoporosis Education Project and the Nutrition Education and Consulting Service in Syracuse New York . She conducts research, lectures widely on osteoporosis prevention and reversal, and teaches the use of a holistic, natural program for the regeneration of bone health. The service offers telephone consultations with individuals the world over. Find out more at www.susanbrownphd.com or www.betterbones.com
